| There seems to always be a raging debate in the automotive world between using aftermarket and original equipment manufacturer parts. One of the best demonstrations of the strength of OEM parts can be seen with Toyota, where using Toyota OEM parts is almost always noticeable because of the noted reliability of Toyota OEM parts.
Some people opt to use aftermarket parts for their Toyota instead of using Toyota OEM parts. However, these people neglect to consider part life span. While aftermarket parts may be cheaper in some cases initially, it is a widely known fact that aftermarket parts are designed to fit as many vehicles as possible. Because Toyota OEM parts are made to fit that specific vehicle, this generally results in dramatically increased part life.
Most non genuine Toyota parts will also claim to have absurd horsepower and torque gains. If you simply work out the math on many of these items, it's not even possible to get the gains that the manufacturer claims. Also, many include fine print stating that this was for a vehicle not even similar to yours, such as automotive tuner programs that claim numbers as high as 60HP rear wheel gains. Merely flashing a computer chip can almost never have this sort of gain unless something was already wrong with the computer.
However, Toyota OEM parts are designed to work and last. They uphold the legendary reputation of Toyota for pure reliability and usefulness and meet strict government regulations, including complying with California Air Resources Board regulations in addition to federal regulations. It's been proven many times over that Toyota OEM parts last longer than other company's parts. Almost all vehicle manufactures create their parts to a higher degree of standards, merely because they know that if they do not they will be footing hefty warranty repair bills.
It should also be noted that many Toyota Camry parts that are not genuine are not California Air Resources Board certified, also known as CARB certification. What this means is that, if you're using one of the aftermarket parts on your vehicle, you may not pass the California required state inspection. Officials will instruct you to purchase a California Air Resources Board-certified part and replace the non-compliant part immediately. Many other states also require inspections, for both safety and emissions reasons. While many of these states do not penalize you for having a non-certified part on your vehicle, some such as California can impose fairly hefty fines upon you for the infraction. Failing a safety inspection can also result in the vehicle being completely towed away if the infraction is severe enough to warrant it.
Toyota OEM parts, on the other hand, are always CARB certified and you also know for a fact that the part in question will pass safety inspections as it was with the vehicle in the first place. As long as a certified mechanic installed the part, you can rest assured that it will pass. Installing the part yourself is always a viable option, but for the sake of emissions and safety parts, it is always recommended that a professional install the parts or make any necessary changes.
It should also be brought to light that illegally modifying an emissions system can often carry severe fines and penalties from both your local and federal governments, ranging from a simple order to remove the part all the way up to $10,000 in fines. If you doubt that a part would pass inspection, simply use Toyota OEM parts. |
